2020 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico Reviews

93 Pointz James Suckling

“A classic Chianti Classico with plums, strawberries, and peaches on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a long, linear finish with brightness and focus. Juicy finish. Drinkable now, but even better in a year or two.”

93 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2020 Chianti Classico is Sangiovese with small parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This is a lovely wine with a level of punchiness, brightness, and inner energy that is never easy to achieve, especially in a warm vintage such as this. That's the Panzano magic, enhanced in this case by the estate's non-interventionist winemaking philosophy. You'll love to drink this entry-level wine no matter what your personal preference in Sangiovese style. Production is 31,373 bottles.”

91 Pointz Vinous

“The 2020 Chianti Classico is brilliant. Vibrant and deep, with striking inner perfume, the 2020 dazzles with gorgeous inner aromas and fine balance. There's good depth and texture, but perhaps not quite the excitement of the best years. April was especially challenging for Sangiovese, which lowered yields considerably.”

2019 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico Reviews

95 Pointz James Suckling

“This is a fantastic Chianti Classico with so much complexity and intensity. Cherry, chocolate, hazelnut, and wet earth with some black truffle. It’s medium-bodied with depth of fruit and fantastic texture and length. Don’t miss this. Sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Unfiltered.”

94 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Juicy and delicious, this opens with aromas of iris, rose, dried aromatic herbs, and wild berries. Smooth and medium-bodied, the palate features succulent Marasca cherry, ripe raspberry, ground clove, and crushed mint set against taut, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced.”

93 Pointz Vinous

“The 2019 Chianti Classico is an explosion of aromas and flavors. Freshly cut, flowers and red/purplish fruit abound. A classic example of the year, Rampolla's Chianti Classico is flat-out gorgeous and one of the best recent editions I can remember tasting. The 2019 is a blend of Sangiovese (aged in cask) plus dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (done in French oak).”

93 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“This is such a pretty wine and such an absolute pleasure to drink, thanks to its intrinsic simplicity and brightness. The Castello dei Rampolla 2019 Chianti Classico gives us a textbook rendition of Tuscany's Sangiovese grape, with the extra brightness, sharpness, and crisp acidity that comes naturally. This wine reveals a profoundly authentic character with wild berry, lavender, garden soil, and crushed aspirin.”

92 Pointz Wine Spectator

“An inviting red, with strawberry, cherry, rose hip, and floral aromas and flavors allied to an elegant frame. Features a firm backbone of tannins and lively acidity, which provide support, and lingers with bright fruit and a crisp feel.”

2018 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico Reviews

94 Pointz Wine & Spirits

“The Di Napoli family has vines in Panzano, farmed biodynamically for 25 years, yielded an impressively dark and plummy wine in 2018. It opens with a hint of volatility that blows off to reveal scents of lavender and violet. The wine ripe black-cherry flavors are infused with powerful, mineral tannins that keep it taut through the finish.”

94 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Black-skinned fruit, new leather, tilled earthy and blue flower aromas mingle with camphor on this fragrant, enticing red. Fresh and savory, the elegant, full-bodied palate doles out ripe black plum, juicy Morello cherry, licorice, and tobacco alongside polished tannins that give it a velvety texture. Fresh acidity lends brightness and balance. Drink 2022-2028.”

93 Pointz James Suckling

“A wonderful young Chianti Classico with aromas and flavors of black cherries, dark chocolate, wet earth, and black truffle. It’s full-bodied with creamy and juicy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Drink or hold.”

93 Pointz Vinous

“The 2018 Chianti Classico is fabulous. Deep, rich, and superexpressive, the 2018 captures the essence of the house style, with a dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon that adds both complexity and structural intensity. Black cherry, plum, licorice, lavender, and dried herbs are kicked up a few notches. This is an especially rich style for the year, but it works so well.”

92 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2018 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico shows some softness and extra and extra ripeness with dark fruit and plum followed by savory smoke and spice. This is an expression of the one and only Panzano in Chianti, a promising subzone in the larger Chianti Classico appellation with panoramic views awash in soft golden light at the end of each glorious day. To the palate, the wine delivers rich, mid-weight intensity with more textured and succulent flavors to follow. This wine is just lovely, especially when tasted right out of the gate when those cherry and blackberry tones are at their brightest.”

92 Pointz Wine Spectator

“Smooth and charming, delivering cherry, strawberry, mineral, and tobacco flavors on a graceful frame. This is almost seamless at this young stage and should provide pleasure over the next decade. Drink now through 2030. 2,900 cases made, 625 cases imported.”

2017 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico Reviews

94 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Plum, fragrant blue flower, leather, and ripe berry are just some of the aromas you'll find on this fragrant, delicious wine. It's chewy and enveloping but also boasts a weightless elegance, delivering juicy Marasca cherry, cranberry compote, licorice, and tobacco while velvety fine-grained tannins offer polished support. Drink through 2023.”

93 Pointz James Suckling

“The nose of this Chianti Classico is unique, with abundant fresh rose petals, orange zest, and lemon peel. Medium-bodied and very lithe yet firm on the palate. Elegant and very taut and tangy on the finish. So well done in a challenging vintage. Drink now.”

92 Pointz Wine Spectator

“Almond and chestnut notes accent the cherry flavors in this broad, tannic red. Features ample fruit, while a sweetness returns at the end, suggesting that this will achieve equilibrium with time. Leather, earth, and iron elements add depth. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2022 through 2032. 1,380 cases made, 500 cases imported.”

91 Pointz Wine & Spirits

“Maurizia Di Napoli’s 2017 annata from her biodynamically farmed vineyards in Panzano offers succulent flavors of seeded red berries, with great verve and personality in the layers of lavender, rosemary, and sage. The flavors persist on a long and balanced finish.”

88 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2017 Chianti Classico is a tad too ripe for my tastes. You taste the heat of the vintage in those aromas of blackberry preserves and strawberry jam. Background notes of apricot and candied orange peel add to that characteristic hot vintage bouquet. I would suggest a near-term drinking window as a result.”

2016 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico Reviews

94 Pointz Wine Spectator

“Purity and intensity mark this supple, complex red, bursting with black cherry, black currant, plum, graphite, sanguine, and tobacco notes that show an underlying woodsy accent. The well-integrated structure lends support as this plays out on the long finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2021 through 2035. 2,916 cases made, 850 cases imported.”

92 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Ripe black-skinned berry, underbrush, violet, new leather, and cake spice aromas shape the nose on this earthy, fragrant red. Bright and savory, the vigorous palate offers juicy Marasca cherry, raspberry jam, cinnamon, and star anise alongside a hint of game. Taut, grainy tannins provide support. Drink 2021”

91 Pointz Wine & Spirits

“One of our tasting- panel members called this a great natural wine to show someone who doesn’t drink natural wine.” It opens with some volatile notes that blow off to reveal palate-saturating flavors of black cherry and sour plum that are more blue-fruited than typical of Sangiovese, perhaps derived from the small percentages of merlot and cabernet sauvignon included in the blend. Raspy tannins frame the flavors, which seem to gain vitality with exposure to air.”

2015 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico Reviews

93 Pointz James Suckling

“A wonderful floral Chianti Classico with jasmine and elderberry flowers not to mention smoke, plums and light chocolate. Medium to light body, soft tannins and fresh acidity.”

92 Poimtz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2015 Chianti Classico is a polished and intermediate wine that puts forth a beautiful bouquet built on solid layers of healthy fruit primary fruit. The wine offers expansive aromas and balsam herb. That ubique vertical intensity you see here is what sets wine apart. In fact, it may even show minimal volatility or other similar so-called imperfections, although this quality servesto build the momentum and the persistence of the wine. I love the style put forth here.”

92 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Aromas of truffle, leather, menthol, and mature plumtake the lead on this concentrated red. The aromas follow through to the full-bodied, chewy palate along with fleshy black cherry, licotice and dried herb. Close -grained tannins provide the assertive framework. Drink 2019-2025.”

2014 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico Reviews

91 Pointz James Suckling

“A dense and rich red with chocolate and leather. Hints of chestnuts. Medium to full body, dense fruit for the vintage. Excellent. Drink now.”

90 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Among the many new releases I tasted  from this vintage, this wine offers an extremely pure and genuine expression of Sangiovese. The 3024 Chianti Classico shows wild and unpredictable aromas of wild berry, white almond and freshly milled peppercorn. There are subtle nuances of blue flower and moist earth as well. But this wine really excels when it comes to showing the tangy and spicy-side of Sabgiovese. The mouthfeel is thin and crisp, but this wine also shows introspective grace and inner elegance. The tannins are sweet and firm.”

2013 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico Reviews

93 Pointz Wine Spectaor

“A rich core of cherry, black currant and violet sits apart from the granular tannins in this sinewy red. Has everything in the right proportions, so give this a year or so to integrate more fully. Best from 2018 through 2024.”

92 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Maurizia Di Napoli's 2013 Chianti Classico was released in May (much earlier than usual) to make up for shortages of the 2012 vintage. This is a beautiful expression of Sangiovese with fine tannins and tight consistency. The wine shows the elegance and the sharp focus that is the hallmark of this stunning property in Panzano-in-Chianti. The wine is 90% Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.”

91 Pointz James Suckling

“Very silky and balanced with refined tannins, blackberry and chocolate aromas and flavors. Medium body, flavorful finish. Always and beauty and from organically grown grapes. Drink now.”

91 Pointz Vinous

“Rampolla's 2013 Chianti Classico is dark, sensual and inviting. Sweet red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and tobacco flesh out in a pliant Chianti Classico that offers both plenty of fruit and structure. Ideally, readers should cellar the 2013 for at least another year to allow the full breadth of flavors and textures to open up. The style is rich, intense and powerful to the core. In other words; classic Rampolla.”

91 Pointz Wine & Spirits

“A pleasant bitter-almond note accents this wine’s flavor of fresh Morellino cherries and raspberries. It takes on darker notes of anise and roasted beef, yet those brigh berry flavors persist, buoyed by juicy acidity. Its firm structure suggests it will be even in a couple of years.”

2012 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico Reviews

91 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

The 2012 Chianti Classico opens to primary fruit aromas of cherry and red currant. Balsam herb, rosemary, almond paste and a strong wiff of medicinal herb rise from the bouquet. There is a lightness to the mouthfeel, a firmness of texture that is really beautiful to feel over the palate.

90 Pointz Wine & Spirits

“Poised and balanced, with enticing floral aromes and pure red fruit flavors, this offers chewy black cherry and red plum sensations, and vibrant acidity, with undertones of leafy herbs and baking spices. Aged for 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks and with small percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, this is pleasurable now and will improve for another several  years in bottle.”

90 Points Wine Spectator

“A fruity style, boasting cherry, curant and raspberry flavors, shaded buy spice and tobacco. Firm, chalky tannins show on the vibrant finish. Drink now through 2019. 3,333 cases made.”

“Classicists will love the 2010 Chianti Classico, a wine that delivers superb quality and pedigree in its price range. The aromas and flavors are brighter and more nuanced than in the more fruit-driven 2011. Savory herbs, black cherries and graphite inform the crystalline, weightless finish. Readers who can find the 2010 should not hesitate. This is a gorgeous showing from Rampolla.”

90 Pointz Wine Spectator

“Attractive aromas of cherry, plum and leather introduce this intense, lively red, supported by dense tannins. Finishes long, revealing an echo of sweet fruit. Drink now through 2022.”
