2019 Castello di Bossi Gran Selezione Reviews

96 Pointz Wine Spectator

“A solidly built red, this has a purity to the cherry, strawberry, rose, mineral, and herb aromas and flavors. The muscular finish begs for more time for the beautiful fruit to assimilate. Offers excellent balance and length.”

94 Pointz James Suckling

“Lots of blackberry, black-cherry, and lavender aromas with some sage. Medium to full body, firm tannins, and a fresh finish. Linear and polished red. From organically grown grapes.”

93 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Woodsy aromas of pine needles and underbrush blend with spices and herbs before a distinctive note of anise takes over on the nose. On the palate, herbaceous, earthy flavors remain dominant, joined by black cherries and finishing with the citric, astringent bite of orange pith.”

“Mid-to-deep ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Soft, elegant nose with cherry and a suggestion of sweet spice. Juicy, lively cherry fruit on the palate with fine, gravelly tannins. Elegant, long, animating, and understated.”

2018 Castello di Bossi Gran Selezione Reviews

93 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“A certified organic wine, the 2018 Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione shows soft fruit richness with ripe cherry and blackberry backed by gentle tannins and rich textural support. This pretty, full-bodied Sangiovese is perfect for pairing with grilled meats or a winter stew.”

93 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Full-bodied and elegantly structured, this 100% Sangiovese, made with organically farmed grapes, has enticing aromas of violet, pipe tobacco, new leather, and camphor. On the savory palate, fine-grained tannins accompany dried cherry, blood orange, licorice and mocha.”

90 Pointz Wine & Spirits

“The team at Castello di Bossi makes this wine with a selection of the best Sangiovese from their 310 acres of vines in Castelnuovo Berardenga. It shows flavors of macerated red cherry and orange peel underlined by chalky tannins. The soft acidity makes it easy to drink on its own or with pasta and poultry dishes.”

“The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Bossi is a soft, easygoing wine. Sweet red cherry, mint, tobacco, dried herbs, and mint give this mid-weight Gran Selezione good aromatic presence to match its accessible personality.”

2017 Castello di Bossi Gran Selezione Reviews

90 Pointz Vinous

“The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Bossi is a powerful, dense, enveloping wine. Sweet red cherry, cedar, pipe tobacco, leather, spice, and earth flavors meld together. Fleshy and deep, with good overall persistence, the Gran Selezione is virile and expressive, both of which will stand it in good stead over the next decade or so.”

2016 Castello di Bossi Gran Selezione Reviews

97 Pointz James Suckling

“A stunning Chianti Classico Gran Selezione that shows pure lavender and violets, in addition to riper dark cherries, tea leaves, olives, eucalyptus, and spice box. Very structured and muscular on the palate, which encompasses layers of dark fruit and plenty of driving acidity to take this through to a long, chewy finish.”

94 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Castello di Bossi (Renieri) is one of the headline estates from the Castelnuovo Berardenga commune of Chianti Classico. The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a terrific wine that unfolds to reveal pretty fruit intensity, deep layers of cherry and blackberry, and a soft texture. The wine is elegant and fresh with steady fruit weight that drives the quality and length of the finish. A well-marbled steak will do nicely here.”

Editors’ Choice

“Enticing aromas of violet, eucalyptus, and leather lead the nose. The fragrant, structured palate delivers black cherry, clove, tobacco, and cinnamon alongside firm, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it well-balanced.”

92 Pointz Vinous

“The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Bossi is an attractive, expressive wine. Sweet red cherry and red plum fruit give the 2016 a nicely sense of immediacy. Pliant and open-knit, with mid-weight structure, the 2016 is impeccably balanced from start to finish. Another year or two in bottle will only help, but all things considered, this is a relatively open Riserva for the vintage.”

92 Pointz Wine Spectator

“The flavors of cherry, strawberry, flowers, fresh herbs, and iron are more forthcoming than the aromas in this version, while the structure is firm and unyielding. Nonetheless, there is a sense of ripeness from the sweet fruit and lingering aftertaste.”

"Marco Bacci has owned this expansive Castelnuovo Berardenga property since 1998 and has significantly increased the Gran Selezione production since the inaugural 2013 vintage - from 10,000 to 50,000 bottles. The 2016 release is robust and big-boned but with a savoury and mellow personality. It is dominated by intriguing nuances of mushroom, spice, and blood. Firm tannins keep the soft fruit in check while measured acidity injects vibrancy. Some warming alcohol on finish."

17.5/20 Pointz Pointz Jancis Robinson, Master of Wine

“Mid ruby. Stony and saline but otherwise rather closed on the nose. Supple and elegant and then vibrant with a gripping, long finish. Fantastic balance.”

2015 Castello di Bossi Gran Selezione Reviews

“This is a fabulous Sangiovese with super fine tannins that melt into the wine. I love the cherry, orange-peel, and floral character. So fine and polished. Agile and floating across the palate.”

“Just mid ruby. Minerally, focused nose and bags of sweet fruit on the palate. Great tannic impact and finely integrated acidity on the finish. Still too young to approach.”

2013 Castello di Bossi Gran Selezione Reviews

93 Pointz James Suckling

“This red shows red plums, black cherries, and white truffles. Full body, round and juicy tannins, and a bright finish. I like the power and the elegance at the same time. Precision and focus of a neoclassical-style wine.”

91 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“This wine represents the newest addition to the Castello di Bossi portfolio of wines. The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione opens to mild aromas of forest berry, redcurrant, spice, grilled herb, and crushed stone. Although the wine holds back in terms of aromatic intensity, it does deliver firmness and a finely knit texture that adds to the polished nature of the mouthfeel and the wine's overall persistency. It is aged in oak for two years.”

89 Pointz Vinous

“The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a racy wine. Fresh, lifted aromatics and silky tannins lend vibrancy to the dark cherry/plum fruit in this mid-weight, precise Chianti Classico. I would give the 2013 at least a few years in bottle to develop more nuance. Today, the wine is quite primary.”

“Promising aromas of exotic sweet spice, dark plum, fennel, and smoky herbs emerge, leading to a tactile mouthfeel. Tangy acidity gives brightness while chalky tannins pull it all together, lending gravity and longevity. This would be tasty with pappardelle in a wild boar sauce.”

“Transparent garnet. Great balance and freshness with dry finish and sappy fruit. A good combo!”
