2019 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Reviews

93 Pointz James Suckling

“Very perfumed and pretty with ripe berry, terra-cotta, and rose petal aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a lovely creamy texture. Fresh and bright. Delicious now but will age nicely. Drink or hold.”

93 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“With fruit from Brunate, Liste, Cerequio, Cannubi, and Raviole, the 2019 Barolo Lecinquevigne is a little subdued on first nose and would benefit from more time in bottle. This wine offers an appellation-wide taste of Nebbiolo, and the focus, consequently, is on the grape more than any single vineyard. These kinds of blends work very well in a vintage like 2019 that holds its own in terms of balance, intensity, and texture.”

92 Pointz Wine Spectator

“A taut, linear red, with macerated cherry and plum flavors augmented by hay, spices, and iron. This has ample fruit and savory notes waiting to shine through once the tannic structure mellows.”

“The second of our brace of 2019 Baroli is the darker of the pair, perhaps the result of having spent only 24 rather than 36 months in wood. It, too, is a wine of gentleness and refinement, with bright plum fruits and warm spice both apparent in the aromas, within the context of an aromatic profile both seamless and harmonious. It’s ample in the palate yet round-contoured, with acidity here as important an element of the wine’s structure as is tannin. The tannins, indeed, are unintimidating and supportive – but resonant and flavoury, too, in best Barolo style. The overall impression of an easy-rolling roundness is underscored by the wealth of fruit which sings through the palate. For all that, this is a serious Barolo which could easily take five to ten years’ further ageing: an ideal introduction to the pleasures of the 2019 vintage in this emblematic Piedmontese region.”

2018 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Reviews

92 Pointz James Suckling

“There’s a bright, cedary-spice note pervading the nose and palate of this medium-bodied Barolo, with tight, fine tannins and a focused finish. This needs some time to open up and allow more fruit to rise to the surface. Try from 2025.”

92 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“A blend of fruit from five MGA sites (Brunate, Liste, Cerequio, Cannubi, and Raviole), the 2018 Barolo Lecinquevigne shows that pretty, bright character that we see across this entire portfolio from Damilano. This wine is accessible and up front in its delivery of wild cherry, rose, and lilac. This expression from the five vineyards definitely sets itself up for a near-term drinking window lasting a decade or so.”

91 Pointz Wine Spectator

“Firmly in the savory camp, this red delivers eucalyptus, juniper, sage, and smoky flavors, along with cherry and berry notes. Dense and full of ripe fruit, this ends with freshness and length.”

“Very expressive and perfumed with plenty of violets and liquorice overlaying the ripe forest fruits and pronounced oak finish.”

2017 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Reviews

94 Pointz James Suckling

“A juicy red with dried strawberry and orange peel, as well as cedar and spice undertones. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, fine tannins that are integrated with a flavorful finish. Juicy with lots of flavor. Approachable now, but better in 2024.”

92 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Aromas of ripe wild berry, blue flower, and forest floor mingle with a balsamic whiff of camphor. Full-bodied and firmly structured, the palate offers ripe black-skinned berry, raspberry compote, licorice and menthol alongside tightly knit, fine-grained tannins.”

91 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“As its name suggests, this wine draws its fruit from five crus across the appellation. They are Brunate, Liste, Cerequio, Cannubi and Raviole. The 2017 Barolo Lecinquevigne is balanced and bright. If there are leading qualities to assign to the Damilano family wines, they are consistency and accessibility. This medium-term 2017 is linear and less constructed overall, and you do sense some of the ripeness of the vintage, thanks to that sweet spot on the close.”

90 Pointz Wine Spectator

“Sweet red cherry and berry flavors are augmented by spice, tar, and wild herbs in this lightly chewy red. Firm and finishes on the dry side in the balance, yet with fine length.”

89 Pointz Wine & Spirits

“This deeply colored wine shows signs of the hot and dry 2017 vintage in its candied cherry flavors. Notes of sweet spice enliven the fruit, but the wine would benefit from a light chill before serving.”

“A classic, slightly rustic style. Concentrated blackcurrant with meaty, leathery notes. A long finish with firm tannins and balanced acidity.”

2016 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Reviews

95 Pointz James Suckling

“A tannic wine, yet the tannins are round and ripe with softness and ripeness. Medium to full body. Firm and racy with beautiful length. The real deal. Needs time to soften. Better after 2023.”

93 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“This is a blend of the five vineyard sites farmed by Damilano, and if you look at the single-vineyard wines in this portfolio, you see Brunate, Liste, Cerequio, Cannubi, and Raviole. The 2016 Barolo Lecinquevigne offers a 360-degree view of Barolo with pretty primary fruit backed by elegant tannins and mid-weight fruit fiber. The wine is a happy sum of its various parts, and as expected, you can't really make out the characteristics of any one unique growing site. That's exactly the philosophy behind a blended wine like Lecinquevigne. The wine ages in large oak casks for 24 months. Some 60,000 bottles were made, and you get good value here.”

93 Pointz Wine Spectator

“There are plenty of savory notes—eucalyptus, juniper, and thyme—reconciled by cherry and earth flavors in this red, which shows a midpalate sweetness before the pointed tannins emerge. The finish is long and satisfying. Best from 2023 through 2040. 5,000 cases made, 2,500 cases imported.”

92 Pointz Jeb Dunnuck

“Lecinquevigne is produced from five vineyards in the communes of Barolo, Grinzane Cavour, and Monforte, and was aged for 24 months in large barrels of 20-100 hectoliters. The 2016 Barolo Lecinquevigne has classic aromas of tar, dried leather, cherry, and violets. Its structure is up-front, with tannic grip and driving acidity, fresh cranberry, orange rind, and clove. The 2016 is tightly wound and will benefit from cellaring 3-5 years. Drink 2024-2042.”

92 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Pressed rose, woodland-berry, and menthol aromas take center stage. It's full-bodied and tense, offering dried cherry, cranberry, and licorice framed in tight fine-grained tannins that leave a drying close. Drink 2024–2031.”

91 Pointz Wine & Spirits

“An assembly of fruit from vines in five different communes of Barolo, this approachable wine offers flavors of dark cherry, tobacco, and cocoa wrapped in round, supple tannins.”

2015 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Reviews

93 Pointz James Suckling

“Rose petals, dried cedar, hazelnuts, and tobacco. Very structured and powerful, but with enough generous fruit not to be hard nor intrusive. Full-bodied and long on the finish.”

92 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2015 Barolo Lecinquevigne (with 60,000 bottles produced) shows ripe fruit with notes of raspberry and dark cherry. There is that moment of ripeness where the wine suddenly pulls itself together to offer more richness and velvety saturation at the back. This is a solid, easy-drinking expression with generous and round contours. This wine is ready to drink straight out of the gate, with a grilled steak.”

92 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“New leather, tilled earth, mature black-skinned fruit, and menthol aromas are front and center. The juicy palate offers ripe Marasca cherry, star anise, and ground brown pepper, while polished tannins lend support. Drink 2022–2027.”

“A blend of fruit from the communes of Barolo, Novello, and Grinzane Cavour, this has notes of orange peel and tarragon that brightens its flavors of black cherry and plum. Ripe tannins frame the fruit as notes of licorice linger on the finish.”

90 Pointz Wine Spectator

This rich red delivers ripe plum, cherry, licorice and leather aromas and flavors. The tannins are present and refined. Balanced and long overall. Best from 2021 through 2037. 5,500 cases made, 2,700 cases imported.

“From five different vineyards within four villages (Barolo, Grinzane, Monforte, and Novello), Le Cinque Vigne perfectly represents the tradition in Barolo of focussing on blends rather than single crus. Grinzane-Cavour dominates in this wine, as suggested by the more ready to drink, velvety style. But you shouldn't really consider it the entry level Barolo from Damilano because of its layered complexity, ranging from wild strawberry to cacao beans underlined by liquorice and tar notes, with full body and good concentration. Drinking Window 2019 - 2029.”

2014 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Reviews

91 Pointz James Suckling

“Very pretty 2014 with orange-peel, leather, spice, and plum character. Medium body, firm tannins, and a juicy finish. Drink or hold.”

90 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2014 Barolo Lecinquevigne is a nice, accessible wine for Barolo newbies. It has a lean appearance with flashes of black licorice and scorched earth, along with some interesting tar or asphalt notes.”

90 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Fragrant blue-flower, rose and chopped mint aromas lead the nose along with a whiff of eucalyptus. The taut medium-bodied palate offers sour cherry, cranberry, dried sage, and a white-pepper note alongside youthfully austere fine-grained tannins and firm acidity. Drink 2021–2026.”

90 Pointz Wine Spectator

“Walks the line between dusty cherry fruit and leather and tobacco flavors, buoyed by vibrant acidity and light tannins that leave a dusting of cocoa and spice on the finish. Elegant, yet intense. Best from 2023 through 2042. 5,000 cases made, 495 cases imported.”

2013 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Reviews

93 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Aromas of red berry, violet, and baking spice are front and center. Polished and savory, the palate offers cinnamon and crushed herb alongside a backbone of refined tannins. Bright acidity lends nice balance. Drink 2023–2033.”

93 Pointz Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

“This is Damilano's classic Barolo (we are urged to no longer use the word "base") that is made with fruit sourced from various sites across the appellation. The 2013 Barolo Lecinquevigne is fragrant and intense with a mounting sense of aromatic importance and persistence. The effect is really quite beautiful because this wine literally blossoms in the glass before you. In terms of a Barolo that is not from a single vineyard, this wine is at the head of the class. On the quality versus price ratio, it offers great value. Some 60,000 bottles were made, so you should have no problem locating this wine.”

92 Pointz James Suckling

“A linear and refined red with chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Medium body, fresh and clean. Needs a year or two to soften.”

90 Pointz Wine Spectator

“A bright, fresh version, with savory cherry, tobacco, woodsy, and tar flavors. Balanced, remaining firm and long on the finish. Best from 2018 through 2029.”

2012 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Reviews

93 Pointz James Suckling

“Very clean and bright aromas of crushed berries, chocolate, and spices, yet this is subtle and pretty. Full body, firm and silky tannins, and a long, long, polished and tannic finish. Drink or hold.”

92 Pointz Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

“This is a wine I highly recommend especially for those who can't resist the beautiful taste of Nebbiolo in a more informal dining scenario (like around the kitchen table with family and friends). The 2012 Barolo Lecinquevigne sees fruit sourced from five vineyard sites, and all that mixing and matching gives the winemakers more flexibility for achieving quality. For this reason, Lecinquevigne has shown impressive quality over the years. The wine is redolent of wild berry, cola, licorice, and soft spice.”

92 Pointz Wine Spectator

“A firm, lean style, sporting cherry, licorice, mint, tobacco, and tar flavors allied to dry, dusty tannins. Shows fine acidity and balance, with a long aftertaste of licorice, earth, and tar. Best from 2019 through 2033.”

91 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Woodland berry, forest floor, blue flower, tobacco, and a hint of leather come together in the glass. The chewy, accessible palate offers juicy wild cherry, fleshy raspberry, cake spice, and star anise accompanied by velvety tannins.”

2011 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Reviews

92 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The entry-level 2011 Barolo Lecinquevigne is produced with fruit that is sourced from various points throughout the appellation. I highly enjoyed tasting this wine and I enthusiastically recommend it as a result, especially thanks to its affordable price tag. Some 60,000 bottles were produced. Barolo Lecinquevigne opens to bright cherry and blackberry aromas that are followed by delicate tones of spice, tar, and licorice. The finish is long and smooth.”

92 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Aromas of ripe plum, dark berry, violet, baking spice, leather, and tilled earth all come together in the glass. The juicy, structured palate doles out crushed black cherry, anise, ground pepper, tobacco, and a hint of chopped herb. It boasts a great depth of flavors and fruit purity, while firm, velvety tannins give it an almost creamy mouthfeel. Drink 2018–2027.”

91 Pointz James Suckling

“A Barolo with a lovely core of ripe fruit, velvety tannins, and a rich, fruity, spicy finish. Savory and delicious. Yet shows grip with tannin structure at the finish.”

90 Pointz Vinous

“Damilano's 2011 Barolo Lecinquevigne is a very pretty, entry-level Barolo. Succulent red cherries, sweet spices, tobacco, mint, and leather are all pushed forward. Drink this open-knit, forward Barolo over the next handful of years.”

2010 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne Reviews

92 Pointz James Suckling

“A balanced and delicious Barolo that delivers so much subtle dried orange and berry character and dusty texture. Plenty of cedar too. It's medium-bodied with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Drink or hold.”

91 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“A blend of Nebbiolo from five different vineyards situated throughout the denomination, it opens with aromas of underbrush, porcini mushroom, black berries, tobacco, and leather. The palate delvers ripe Morello cherry and red raspberry accented with baking spices alongside firm tannins. Drink after 2018.”

90 Pointz Wine Spectator

“Very firm and tightly wound, offering a peek at the cherry, wild berry, floral and tobacco flavors. Lean and dry, with mouthcoating tannins guarding the finish. Best from 2017 through 2028.”
