2021 Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon Reviews

94 Pointz James Suckling

“An elegant and pretty complex expression with an array of red and black cherries, grilled spices, tapenade, and roasted red pepper. Some firm, nicely chewy tannins on the medium- to full-bodied palate gives a tight structure to the juicy fruit. Dialled back and fresh. Shows the angular tannins from the granitic soils.”

92 Pointz Vinous

“The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Cuvée Alexandre from Apalta, Colchagua, was aged for up to 14 months in used barrels. Purple in the glass. The aromas feature cassis and blackcurrant notes with hints of pepper, bay leaf, and mint over a deep layer of oak. In the mouth, it delivers good structure with juicy, grippy tannins and intense red fruit flavor. This is a full-bodied, nuanced wine with a lingering finish. The cool weather of 2021 has helped Lapostolle’s traditionally over-ripe style to achieve a new complexity.”

90 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The creamy and sleek 2021 Cuvée Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon reveals abundant notes of herbs and spices, a ripe profile, and abundant, slightly grainy tannins. This is not 100% Cabernet; it has 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot and matured in French oak barrels, 30% of them new, for 13 months.”

“Youthful, with abundant raspberry coulis and red currant aromas and flavors, which have a creamy edge and are supported by mineral and white pepper details on the finish.”

“The Cuvée Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% each of Merlot and Petit Verdot, is one of the bodega's best sellers and comes from older parcels in the lower part of the estate. Subtly wooded in 30% new wood, it has plum, fig, and mulberry fruit and supple, textured tannins.”

2020 Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon Reviews

94 Pointz James Suckling

“A rich and deep expression of blackcurrants and blackberries with hints of red chili pepper, tobacco, and cocoa powder, following through to a full body with powerful but fine, seamless tannins. A dash of petit verdot here. Compact and bright.”

90 Pointz Vinous

“The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Cuvée Alexandre is also 10% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, all from Apalta, Colchagua, aged for up to 14 months in used barrels. Purple with a garnet sheen. The liqueur-like nose presents notes of sour cherry and black currant plus hints of pepper and mint. In the mouth, it delivers good structure with firm tannins, juicy acidity, and intense flavor. This is a full-bodied wine that needs time in the bottle.”

90 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“This red is a Cabernet Sauvignon (with a splash of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) that opens with aromas of cranberry and chalk followed by hints of cedar and pronounced spices. It delivers plenty of toasted oak and herbs flavors on the mineral palate.”

“The Cabernet Sauvignon is the pick of the Cuvée Alexandre reds in 2020, possibly because it hails from a south-east facing site that sees less sun. Blended with 10% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, it's fresh, granular, and well-balanced, with subtle mocha oak, refined tannins, and old vine concentration.”

2019 Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon Reviews

94 Pointz James Suckling

Very pretty currant, blackberry, and floral aromas and flavors. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and a chewy finish. Give it two or three years to soften.”

92 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

"I was surprised by the varietal purity of the 2019 Cuvée Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon despite being blended with some 9% Carmenere, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, which probably adds complexity and more Bordeaux character to the bottled wine. But it also has Chilean character, balsamic and round, with good acidity and pungent flavors. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak barrels for 16 months. It's quite classical."

91 Pointz Vinous

“The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Cuvée Alexandre also includes Carménère (9%), Cabernet Franc (4%), and Petit Verdot (1%) from Apalta, Colchagua, and was aged for 16 months in French barrels, 25% of them new. On the nose it presents dried plums, cherries, and mint over an expressive bed of spices in which white pepper mingles with cigar box aromas. In the mouth, it begins with a lush flourish of grippy tannins that won’t be truly polished for a little white. A compact, elegant, and potent wine.”

2018 Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon Reviews

95 Pointz James Suckling

“The blackcurrants and violets are impressive on the nose with hints of slate. Full-bodied, yet always refined and in check. Linear and tight. Black olives and blue fruit at the finish.”

90 Pointz Vinous

“Macerated for 30 days after fermentation, this Cabernet Sauvignon from Apalta, Colchagua, really turns up the volume. On the nose it presents red fruits, cherries, and cassis over an expressive bed of spices, where white pepper comes to the fore. It enters the mouth with a lush flourish in which the tannins soon take over, backed up by 14 months in new and used barrels. It’ll be a while before they’re truly polished.”

“There’s no new oak at all on this Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend with 15% Cabernet Franc and Carmenère, allowing the ripe, full-flavoured plum and blackberry fruit to express itself. The tannins add structure, the acidity welcome freshness.”

2015 Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon Reviews

94 Pointz James Suckling

“A very complex cabernet with violet, blackcurrant and lavender character. Some mint. Full body, firm and velvety tannins, and a cedar and hazelnut finish. Made from biodynamically grown grapes.”

2014 Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon Reviews

95 Pointz James Suckling

"Wonderful aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and hot stones. Full-bodied, chewy, and intense with great depth and intensity. Muscular tannins. From biodynamically grown grapes. Best ever? Old vine magic."

Editor's Choice

"This lusty Cabernet is earthy, jammy, and warm on the nose. In the mouth, this is broad and massive, with an undercurrent of firm tannins that provide structure. Deep dark flavors of blackberry, plum, and fig finish with strength on a fruit-packed finish.”

90 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

"The 2014 Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vines planted in 1920 on granitic soils in the Apalta Valley in Colchagua. It contains 10% Carmenere. Most of the volume fermented in stainless steel tanks, and 20% did it in oak vats. The wine matured in French oak barrels for ten months. In Colchagua, 2014 was less warm than 2015, and this Cabernet seems to have behaved very well this year. It's quite classical and shows balsamic aromas of camphor and cedar wood with a core of black fruit. The palate shows the consistency of the tannins of the variety, with a good mid palate. One for food and able to age in bottle."
