“Very complex nose with a wide spectrum of candied citrus, dried peach, and mirabelle tart aromas. Bold and rich, particularly on the mid-palate, but with a great deal of subtlety and delicacy for the vintage. This is already delicious, but at the finish you really taste how this has been made for the long term. Great drive and persistence right at the end. Drink or hold.”

95 Pointz Vinous

The 2015 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill shows off the savory side of the vintage to great effect. Hints of dried pear, sage, mint, dried flowers, lemon oil, and chamomile open gradually in this mid-weight, lithe edition of Pol Roger's tête de cuvée. The 2015 unfolds nicely with time in the glass, but I wouldn't think of opening a bottle anytime soon. Readers will find a nervy Winston Churchill marked by notable freshness and vigor more than size. This is a fine effort in a vintage that has proven to be far trickier than most observers originally envisioned. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged September 2022.

95 Pointz Wine Spectator

“A tightly meshed Champagne, with an up-front, broad feel that's quickly reined in and well-defined by racy acidity. Creamy on the palate, with the fine mousse carrying flavors of crème de cassis, lemon-infused pastry cream, smoked almond, and oyster shell. Long, harmonious finish. Drink now through 2038.”

94 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“A strong effort in a less-acclaimed vintage, Pol Roger's newly released 2015 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill opens in the glass with aromas of confit citrus, ripe orchard fruits, and dried white flowers mingled with hints of honeycomb, freshly baked bread and anise. Medium to full-bodied, vinous, and concentrated, with bright acids, chalky structuring extract, and a pinpoint mousse, this inherently rather rich, gastronomic Champagne is quite tightly wound out of the gates and will reward a bit of bottle age. Stylistically, it is somewhat reminiscent of a modern-day version of the 1985.”

“Although ready to drink, this very fine Champagne has plenty of aging to go. With its rich Pinot Noir and ripe fruits, it is generous while also fully textured. Complex and balanced, mature fruit and toast working together, this is a great wine.”

97 Pointz Jeb Dunnuck

“The 2013 Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill Brut, composed of 95% Pinot Noir, is the 20th release of this cuvée, and this version is robust, classic, and noble in its expression. The color is a medium straw, and the aromas are complex and compelling, with smoke, graham biscuit, currant, and orange marmalade. It has immediate appeal and charm. The palate is structured, yet refreshing, and savory with grip and an energetic citrus that doesn’t seem to taper.”

97 Pointz James Suckling

“Complex and subtle aromas of dried ginger, pie crust, cooked apple, and cooked peach follow through to a full body with ginseng, toasted bread, and dried apple. Very fine and multi-dimensional. Great wine.”

97 Pointz Vinous

“The 2013 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is fabulous. Rich and remarkably pure, the 2013 is super- expressive right out of the gate. Bright saline notes cut through a core of lemon confit, dried flowers, apricot, tangerine peel, mint, and sage. As compelling as the 2013 is, it really needs more time to open a bit. There is a feeling of transparency here that is so alluring. The 2013 is a terrific example of power with no excess weight in Champagne. I loved it. Disgorged: July 2021. Dosage is 7 grams per liter.”

96 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2013 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill continues to show beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, mandarin oil, freshly baked bread, and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy, and precise, it's deep and vinous, with a racy spine of an acidity and a tensile but relatively charming profile that means it's already approachable. In style, the 2013 is in contrast with the broader, fleshier 2012, but the two vintages are very close in ultimate quality.”

95 Pointz Wine Spectator

“An expressive Champagne, with ripe and juicy pineapple, cassis, and apricot fruit flavors married to notes of brioche, saline, lemon curd, and honeysuckle. Backed by a spine of fresh acidity, this is well-cut and harmonious, with the fine and creamy mousse carrying the flavor range on the lasting finish. Drink now through 2035. 600 cases imported.”

“The 2013 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill has an elegant yet refined bouquet of lemon, orchard fruit, and spring flowers, intertwined with pure notes of brioche and pastry. The palate is crystalline, with racy acids and an elegant, penetrating finish. There is a lively touch of mint. This is a particularly delicate and tense iteration of the cuvée. Very charming.”

“Beautifully fresh and youthful in style. Tight and lemon-driven at first. Sherbet and citrus and plenty of non-fruit character – steely, chalky, mineral indeed. With a bit of air, the toastiness and yeastiness emerges, adding that sensation of walking past an open bakery door. Saline finish, open and rich and delicious.”

“The great 2012 vintage shows well in this rich, full Champagne. Dominated as usual by Pinot Noir, the wine is powerfully ripe and impressively full of white fruits and tight minerality. Ready to drink from 2022, it is worthy of aging and certainly drinkable even in 10 years time.”

98 Pointz James Suckling

“Intense aromas of strawberry and subtle apple with pie crust and some ash and stone. An almost smoky undertone to the aromas. Full-bodied and very layered with ultra fine tannins that give it a rough-cut, velvety texture. It’s very flavorful, yet so checked and reserved at the same time. Compact, tight palate that is deep and powerful. Very vinous at the end and in the mouth feel. Spicy and biscuity at the finish. Mostly pinot noir with chardonnay and only grand cru. More density and complexity than the 2008. Seven years on the lees. Delicious and luxurious to drink now, but giving this some age will make it even better.”

97 Pointz Wine Spectator

“Sleek, with racy acidity, this tightly-meshed version nonetheless offers a lovely range of flavors, with ripe black cherry and currant fruit and accents of pomegranate, candied kumquat, and raw almond. Finely detailed, creamily swaths the palate in silk-like texture, carrying the expanding flavor profile through to a graphite- and spice-laced, lasting finish.”

96 Pointz Vinous

“Pol Roger's flagship Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is fabulous in 2012. Rich, open-knit, and seductive, the 2012 will drink well right out of the gate, although it certainly has the pedigree to age well for decades. Lemon confit, chamomile, dried flowers, mint, spice, and a kick of brioche infuse the 2012 with notable textural richness and resonance. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous aromatic lift to round things out. The 2012 is classy and polished all the way.”

95 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Richer and fleshier than the 2013, the 2012 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill offers up aromas of ripe citrus and orchard fruits mingled with buttered toast, hazelnuts, and confit peach. Full-bodied, layered and gourmand, with an enveloping core of fruit, excellent depth at the core and a pretty pinpoint mousse, it remains harmonious and precise despite its broader-shouldered format.”

“A deep lemon gold colour, a decorous and persistent bead and then an enticing aromatic of orchard fruit, yeast, spice, and crystallised lemon, behind that the softly beguiling lure of magnificently self- assured Pinot Noir. More immediately attractive than illustrious forebears such as 2002 and 2008, the wine is already encyclopedic in scope, vanilla pod and a lick of sour honey brightly predictive, with more ascetic, chalky, pithy notes underwriting the rigours of today’s structure. A wine of great dignity, authority, and bearing; remind you of anyone? Dosage 7g/L. Disgorged July 2020.”

18/20 Pointz Jancis Robinson,

“More caramel and toffee than the 2013, with green apple and a bit of fresh-cut herb. Powerful and full, with great length and volume – yet despite that intensity, there is plentiful tone of voice. Perhaps less saline than the 2013, but with more candied character and definitely more persistent.”

“As always, this Pinot Noir-dominated Champagne is a great wine. In this vintage, it is fuller than usual, perhaps less structured—a true reflection of the vintage. Like all releases of this cuvée, the wine will age magnificently. Drink now or hold for at least 10 years to get full maturity.”

95 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Pol Roger's 2009 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill has turned out very well, offering up a demonstrative bouquet of golden apples, clear honey, hazelnuts, and fresh pastry that's still quite primary. Full-bodied, fleshy, and textural, it's deep and concentrated, with an ample core of fruit, ripe but racy acids, a pinpoint mousse, and a long, penetrating finish. This is an expressive, deceptively immediate rendition of this bottling, yet despite its charm out of the gates, readers willing to wait at least five years will be rewarded with significant additional complexity.”

95 Pointz Wine Spectator

“A seamless Champagne, lithe with fresh, finely knit acidity, and showing beautiful integration, with a rich vein of smoky minerality underscoring flavors of black cherry, toast, preserved lemon, and pickled ginger. There's power and focus here, but this bubbly highlights the grace and accessibility that 2009 can offer even on release.”

94 Pointz Vinous

“The 2009 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is a heady, explosive Champagne. Ample and deep, the Churchill is so expressive today. Apricot, tangerine oil, mint, baked apple tart, and spice all flesh out. I would give the 2009 at least a year or two in bottle, as it is a bit tight at this stage. Even so, time in the glass brings out a feeling of raw power that is impossible to miss.”

“Bright and lustrous with playful bubbles and a soft mousse, the wine is immediately beguiling, seductive, and more approachable and charming than its immediate forebear (2008). The nose waltzes through the Viennese patisserie and then into the orchard, where red apples rejoin citric rigour and draw the taster in. The ripeness of the vintage translates into a rich, creamy texture, with energy and warmth all underwritten by a dominant but not overly domineering Pinot Noir, its savoury notes destined to take control after this first effervescent flush of youth. The finish is pure and long. A forward and confident SWC, and one to enjoy in relative youth.”

18/20 Pointz Jancis Robinson,

Master of Wine

“Immediate complexity on the nose – salted bread, green apple, a hint of butter. Sweet spice too, and a mushroom earthiness that shows the age. Rich and full on the palate, with superb concentration and persistence, leaving lots of umami/soy complexity on the finish. Is it Burgundian? Certainly vinous, and there is both marine minerality and savoury fruit, but in a different guise to Burgundy. Wonderfully expressive to drink now, but has a good decade of ageability if not more.”

“One of the great Champagnes both for its richness and its longevity, this latest incarnation is superb. The wine's richness is linked to the ripe fruit and the dominance of Pinot Noir in the blend. It also shines in the perfect balance between the texture, the minerality, and the integration of the fruit. It can be enjoyed now, but it will be better from 2020 and then for many years to come.”

97 Pointz James Suckling

“I love the balance between weight and agility in this wine with a dense and compact palate. Yet, there’s brightness and creaminess that melts into the glass. Lots of brioche, pie crust, and strawberry tart. Serious balancing act here. Drinkable, but better with a few years of age.”

97 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2008 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill continues to stand out as the finest rendition of this bottling released in the last 10 years. Just beginning to enter its early drinking window, it wafts from the glass with aromas of ripe apple, confit citrus, and mirabelle plum mingled with notions of sweet spices, honeycomb, dried fruits, and crème brûlée. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's layered and complete, with a racy spine of acidity and a long, penetrating finish.”

“This lovely, elegant version is more about restraint and finesse than power, caressing the palate with a silky mousse and a finely woven range of ripe Asian pear, biscuit, and star fruit flavors, accented by elderflower, ground ginger, and almond skin notes. Lightly mouthwatering, expanding on the chalk-tinged finish.”

“This is the latest release of this legendary wine. A blend, although with a majority of Pinot Noir (Churchill's preference), the wine is rich, just beginning to show wonderful signs of maturity. It still has intense fruit along with the taut mineral texture that will allow the wine to age further. It is a standout Champagne from this vintage. Drink now, although this Champagne will age for many years.”

95 Pointz James Suckling

“Some reductive meaty notes of bacon fat and flint, with lemon cream and butter too, as well as a light forest berry edge and toasted hazelnuts. The palate has attractive lemon citrus cream flavor. Super pure, there's power amongst the charm. This is a great '06.”

95 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Made in the very best vintages, Pol Roger's white-golden colored 2006 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill offers a very clear, precise, ripe, and complex bouquet with fruity and refreshingly chalky, nutty, and brioche notes. Full-bodied and complex on the palate, the 2006 is supple, round, and rich but also fine, elegant, fresh, and well-structured. It has a harmonious yet tight, persistent, and very promising finish that puts this silky textured, Pinot-dominated cuvée (the exact blend is a closely guarded family secret) on the border of fatty richness. But the mousse gives so much freshness and finesse that everything seems lifted here. Though I have very limited experience with matured Champagnes from Pol Roger and namely Churchill, I suppose the 2006 will benefit a lot from further bottle aging. But don't get me wrong: the wine is already gorgeous. Tasted June 2018, disgorged in June 2017.”

95 Pointz Wine Spectator

“This dances gracefully on the palate, with rich and expressive flavors of peach tart, raspberry sorbet, candied ginger, and orange peel, and sleek acidity that leaves a mouthwatering impression on the satiny finish.”

92 Pointz Wine & Spirits

“A classical style of grande marque Champagne, Pol Roger’s tête de cuvée has seamless elegance and clarity of fresh citrus flavor. Rather than minerality and ripe fruit, it’s more about airy fragrance and spicy lemon zest, firm and cool.”

Excellent maturity, showing that magic development of baked apples, burnt caramel (is that an autolysis flavour?), and still-fresh pastries. The nose is un-improvable but the palate is perhaps just a little lighter than I would ideally love. Subtle, caressing style with the most gorgeous pinprick effervescence.”

“Following on from the great 2002 vintage of this wine, the 2004 is equally memorable. It is a magnificent wine, structured and beautifully balanced between the ripe white fruits and the tight texture that will allow it to age many years. While drinkable now, it is still young at 11 years, still with great potential.”

95 Pointz James Suckling

“This has trademark richness, power, and complexity with a layer of spiced grilled hazelnuts and brown-mushroom aromas set across lemon, grapefruit, and dried-red fruits. The palate has a full, pastry-like texture showing bold flavors and an assertively fleshy cherry and peach core. The tannins are smooth and ripe, carrying the finish long. This is framed up for further enrichment. Plenty to offer now but best from 2020 and a decade after that still.”

95 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“An intense golden-yellow color dresses the Pol Roger prestige cuvée 2004 Sir Winston Churchill, which opens with a clear, deep, dense, ripe, fresh, pure, and elegant bouquet of matured apples, apricots, and lemon flavors along with exciting spicy flavors. Although this Brut is already more than 11-years-old, it is dew-fresh and still developing--slowly. This Champagne is highly complex and well structured on the palate, with grapefruit flavors; it is a full-bodied and intense, yet very firm, persistent, fresh, and very elegant assemblage of unnamed Grand Cru Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. It reveals a very long and complex, powerful but stimulating finish, and obviously, an eternal youth. The finish is powerful and stringent, and reveals a great, great aging potential. The wine is somewhat restrained and too compact at the moment though, and should benefit from a longer bottle aging.”

94 Pointz Vinous

“The flagship 2004 Brut Sir Winston Churchill is creamy, ample, and highly expressive, but it is also a bit more forward than I expected for the vintage. Apricot jam, honey, spice, smoke, brioche, and lovely hints of toastiness all add to the wine's considerable appeal, while there is no shortage of density or volume. All that said, the wine's balance is not as fine as I had hoped it would be. Perhaps a bit more time in bottle will do the trick. To be sure, the 2004 Churchill is more advanced than most other tête de cuvées in this vintage.”

94 Pointz Wine Spectator

“This creamy version has a subtle richness, folded into a fresh, elegant frame. Shows layers of crème de cassis, toast, and pastry cream, with citrus peel, smoky mineral, and spice accents echoing on the long finish.”

“Quite spicy on the nose and just a little bready. Quite a bit of grip on the palate, firm, almost chewy but rounded with creamy texture. Crisp acidity and fabulous intensity. Powerful and more red fruited than the previous wine (which turned out to be the 1999 from bottle).”

“With its gold color and mature, toasty flavors, this is possibly the greatest Winston Churchill ever. It has weight and richness, with a dense, full, and rich texture. It’s in perfect balance, bringing together maturity and crisper apple and green plum fruit flavors that are cut with lemon. A mineral edge gives a nervy character that will allow this magnificent wine to age further.”

97 Pointz James Suckling

“Fabulous aromas of dried apple, cream, mango, and ginger follow through to a full, dense palate, but it’s very fine. The bead is so, so fine. The texture is like silk. Truly superb. I love the contrast between richness and freshness. It builds slowly on the palate and finishes so long and rich. This was 10 years on the lees. Mostly Pinot Noir. So superlative to drink.

95 Pointz Vinous

“The 2002 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is wonderfully open, expressive, and resonant. The richness of the vintage comes through nicely, yet the more overt elements are very nicely balanced by a good deal of freshness. Baked apple, pastry, candied lemon, dried flowers, and warm, toasty notes shape the generous, resonant finish. With time in the glass, the 2002 takes on a striking, vinous character. Readers might want to consider opening the 2002 a few hours in advance, as it really blossoms with air.”

95 Pointz Wine Spectator

“There's a sense of quiet elegance and grace to this harmonious Champagne. Refined and lacy in texture, with finely wrought acidity lending focus and length to the spice- and graphite-laced flavors of ripe apricot and blackberry, lemon meringue pie, chopped almond, and briny mineral. Drink now through 2029.”

“Light yellow-gold. Deeply pitched aromas of poached pear, fresh fig, orange custard, and honey, with smoky mineral and buttered toast nuances adding complexity. Stains the palate with ripe citrus and orchard fruit flavors that are given spine and focus by juicy acidity. Closes taut, sappy, and extremely long, with an echo of toastiness and wonderful clarity. All Grand Cru fruit.”

“Dedicated to the memory of the British wartime Prime Minister, who regularly drank Pol Roger, this is always a superlative Champagne. This 2000, at 14 years old, has developed a pale gold color and toastiness. That intensifies the mature flavors and rich texture, while allowing the tight mousse and acidity to keep a sense of structure. It will age much further, although it is perfectly ready to drink now.’

94 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The first thing that is evident about the 2000 Brut Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill is its finesse and total silkiness. The 2000 is a rich, creamy, and deeply expressive Winston Churchill. I don’t see the 2000 being an especially long-term ager, but it is wonderfully radiant and open today. Hints of pastry, spice, apricots, and succulent ripe pears blossom on the expansive, broad-shouldered finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030.”

93 Pointz Stephen Tanzer’s

“Light yellow-gold. Spicy, intensely perfumed aromas of lemon curd, blood orange, anise, and jasmine, with a toasty overtone. Supple and concentrated, with dried citrus and hazelnut flavors complemented by ginger and buttered toast. A long, subtly floral finish shows a hint of smoky minerality and impressive energy. This is drinking well now, but I suspect that this expressive Champagne, which is probably based heavily on Pinot Noir (they won't say), will be at its best over the coming ten years.”

93 Pointz Wine Spectator

“Smoky, with firm structure and a minerally base note, this offers a fine, creamy texture and hints of dried apricot, lemon curd, cassis, biscuit, and blanched almond. The lingering finish echoes the minerality with a touch of oyster shell.”

“Tasted blind. Pale to mid-gold and a bit darker than the 2000 in magnum. Toasty and creamy. Lightly honeyed with a touch of cedar. Very tight on the palate and high acid. Still has plenty of fine mousse. Little bit of spice on the palate, only gently toasty. With time this really tightens up on the palate and seems younger, quite powerful, and great length. Power and precision. Drink 2014 - 2025.”

“With its richness and great density of flavor, this is always a great Champagne. This 1999 is rounder than some vintages, less mineral, while still retaining the balance between white fruit and toast. It is still young, still tightly textured, and ageworthy over several years.”

“The first vintage of chef de cave Dominique Petit, the 1999 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is an especially rich, generous rendition of this bottling. Revealing aromas of buttered toast, sweet stone fruits, orange confit, iodine, and pastry cream, it's full-bodied, fleshy, and gourmand, with a broad attack and a layered core of sweet fruit, concluding with a long, saline finish. This, too, is drinking at its peak today, and once again there's no reason to delay gratification.”

“Pale yellow-gold. Deep, pungent nose offers an array of orchard and citrus fruit qualities, along with notes of iodine, minerals, and toasty lees. Chewy and impressively concentrated, with excellent clarity to its pear and orange flavors. The toasty quality gains strength with air and carries through an impressively long, spicy, floral finish. Very impressive, especially for a release from what is widely considered a so-so vintage for Champagne.”

“Tasted blind. Mid gold. Not a great deal of mousse. Cedary complex yeast aromas. Lightly honeyed but so fresh with lemon and orange citrus on the palate. Gentle mousse and relatively soft on the palate, plenty of red fruit and just a hint of tannin. Subtle and gentle with some bruised apple and gingerbread maturity. Really persistent with that Pinot fruit. Deep and long and spiced as it opens up. My guess: 1998 magnum.”

“Churchill loved Pol Roger Champagne so much he named a race horse after it. When he died, Pol Roger named its tête de cuvée after him. Among the rich and deep, Pinot Noir-based leaders in this tasting, the Cuvée Sir Winnie has always been the one that finds the best balance of boldness and control at the same time. Its toasty, nutty, soy, and chalk first aromas are met by smells of brioche and roasted lemons, and its mousse follows with both power and pinpoint insistence. It eschews the fruitier styles of Dom Perignon and Perrier-Jouet yet has more mannerly lines than the pushy Bollinger and Krug. It is, quite simply, our favorite among a very exciting group of wines.”

“The 1998 Brut Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill opens with intriguing, exotic notes of smoke, cured meats, and tar. This is a big, sweeping Sir Winston Churchill endowed with layers of perfumed ripe pears, quince, flowers, and spices in a style that balances a generous expression of fruit with acidity and minerality. Everything is in the right place in this delicate yet deeply satisfying Champagne. This bottle was disgorged at the beginning of 2007.
