2018 Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Reviews

96 Pointz James Suckling

“Very aromatic, pushing out aromas of dried red and black fruit, including dried blueberries and dates, together with a nice, spicy layer of nutmeg and pressed flowers. Full-bodied with an amazingly harmonious texture to the palate, thanks to the dense, very fine tannins that also provide super length. There’s a bright, saline mineral note that kicks in and pushes the finish even further. Exquisite Amarone.”

“The 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is exotic in the glass, with blood orange and mint nuances giving way to macerated cherries and clove. Supple and round upon entry, this impresses with its core of vibrant acidity and vividly ripe red fruits that create an interplay of sweet and sour on the palate. This tapers off with depth and concentration but is also unexpectedly fresh, leaving notes of plum and autumnal spice to linger on and on. This is a wildly successful effort for the vintage. My hat is off to Zenato.”

92 Pointz Wine Spectator

“A harmonious version, round, and medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins enmeshed with a fragrant mix of steeped cherry and strawberry, tea rose and tea leaf, mineral, and spice flavors. Juicy finish.”

90 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“The aromas of this wine—pomegranate syrup, blackstrap molasses, and macerated plums with bay leaf and star anise—bring you deeper into the glass with each sniff. The wine unfolds onto the palate with a silky texture and is currently focused on lush fruit flavors. Rich and mouth filling, the wine finishes with a touch of acidity that helps perk it up.”

2017 Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Reviews

95 James Suckling

“Complex and deep nose with blackberries and subtle black dates, Chinese herbal medicine, porcini, chili chocolate and cocoa beans. Classic Amarone palate with an excellent balance between juicy freshness and dried fruit. Outstanding tannin quality here, with lots of resolve and finesse. Long and rather subtle, too. Textbook reference for quality Amarone today, with some modern drinkability despite the 16.5% alcohol. Delicious now, but better to hold for extra complexity.”

93 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“This classic Amarone opens up with dark and ripe black cherry and plum mixed with sweet baking spices and roasted coffee. The wine’s palate is focused on its primary blackberry fruit notes with chocolate and sweet and savory spices. The wine is well structured with supple tannins and a long finish.”

92 Pointz Vinous

“There’s a spicy citrus twang that enlivens the dusty black raspberries and exotic spices that waft up from the 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. It’s silken and deeply textural, with a bitter tinge of cinnamon and cacao up front that gives way to sweet wild berries and balsam herbs. There’s a wild air of autumnal spices and inner florals within, as well as saline-minerals that add salty depths. The 2017 finishes incredibly long but also youthfully tense and concentrated. There is a bit of heat that pokes out, but doesn’t get in the way, as nuances of rose and dark chocolate slowly fade. This beastly Amarone will require some cellaring to come fully into focus.”

91 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The Zenato 2017 Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico opens to ripe syrupy aromas of dark cherry and blackberry. The wine is marked by the very hot and dry vintage, and the 16.5% alcohol content is further proof of those extreme conditions. The wine is soft but thickly textured with aged aromas of dried fruit, spice, and cured leather.”

90 Pointz Wine Spectator

“Dark and tangy, this medium- to full-bodied red has hints of crushed pine, violet and mandarin orange peel accenting blackberry fruit, minerally earth, and iron. Well-spiced and expressive on the chewy finish. Corvina, Rondinella, Oseleta and Croatina.”

2016 Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Reviews

94 Pointz James Suckling

“A lovely bag of mixed dried fruit on the nose with currants, cherries, raisins, and more exotic fruit, such as dried papaya. Some vanilla pod, too. Full-bodied with generous, mouth-filling flavors, supported by firm, velvety tannins that push the fruit-forward through the long, long finish. Always excellent Amarone.”

94 Pointz Vinous

“Zesty, vibrant, and exotic, the 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico makes a serious impression with its unique bouquet of dried roses, lime zest, cherry sauce, plums, and a dusting of crushed violet candies. It’s silky and pliant in texture, motivated by juicy acids, with a mix of ripe strawberry, pomegranate, and cranberry sauce, as balsamic spices and hints of almond come forward toward the close. There is so much going on here, as the 2016 resonates on wild berry fruit and sweet inner florals. This may be a more opulent expression of the vintage, but it’s built to last, and sure to win a lot of fans.”

92 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Opening to dried fruit and savory spice, the Zenato 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico leaves no doubt that it was made with the appassimento process, which sees grapes turn into raisins before winemaking. The blend is 80% Corvina, 10% Rondinella and Oseleta, and Croatina representing the last 10%. The wine is open-knit and slightly oxidative, and this suggests a near or medium-term drinking window. There is a soft dose of sweetness on the close.”

92 Wine Spectator

“Expressive and beautifully fragrant, with bright hints of violet and tea rose layered among the richer notes of roasted plum, tobacco, dried cherry and loamy earth. Fresh and finely balanced, this medium-to full-bodied version ends with a chewy finish loaded with zesty ground spice.”

2015 Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Reviews

94 Pointz James Suckling

“While this is heady and spicy, it’s also quite reserved for this producer, framing glazed cherries and dried meat against a backdrop of citrus and roasted herbs. The ornately woven texture and generous fruit work very well with the linear acidity and firm-tannin bite. Really excellent.”

93 Pointz Vinous

“Dark, floral, elegant, and surprisingly savory, the 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico makes itself known as crushed stone gives way to a dusting of confectioner’s sugar, dried flowers, black cherries, plums, and hints of licorice. This is velvety yet cool-toned and spry, with a staining mix of red and black fruits contrasted by sweet spices, as bitter hints of espresso bean and round tannins collect toward the close. A twang of balsamic-tinged blackberry and violets echoes through the long-drawn-out finale. Youthfully structured and still a bit reserved, but there are layers of primary, complexities to keep the experience highly enjoyable today. That said, the best is yet to come.”

90 Pointz Wine Spectator

“This is well-balanced and medium-to full-bodied, layering creamy tannins with a juicy profile of ripe black raspberry and currant fruit, woodsy spice, minerally graphite, and smoke notes. Accessible and elegant.”

“A rich and layered red with chocolate, berry, and cherry character. Spicy undertone. Hints of dried rose petal. Full body, layered, and very fruity. Dried fruits, too. Finishes with chocolate and hazelnut. It's all about balance.”

93 Pointz Wine Spectator

“A harmonious red, integrating fine-grained tannins and an aromatic overtone of fresh herb and spice box with flavors of crushed black cherry and blackberry, smoky espresso, and fig cake. Medium- to full-bodied, with a lovely, creamy finish.”

92 Pointz Vinous

“Deep ruby-red. Strong note of herbs, quinine, and roasted red fruit on the nose. Then fresher and cleaner with lovely floral flavors of red cherry and spicy herbs. Finishes long with youthfully chewy tannins. This will reward cellaring for a few years still.”

91 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Ripe blackberry, baked plum, forest floor, and pipe-tobacco aromas are front and center. The plush full-bodied palate delivers dried cherry, prune soaked in spirits, licorice, and clove framed in velvety tannins. Even though the heat of alcohol is noticeable on the close, it’s well integrated with the rich fruit flavors.”

2012 Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Reviews

92 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Here is a bold and opulent red wine from Northeast Italy. The 2012 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico opens to a tarry-black color and dense extraction. This warm vintage feels even richer and denser still. The bouquet reveals dark prune, spice, leather, and tobacco. The wine shows some bitterness in the mouth with a thick and penetrating finish that sticks to the sides of your mouth. As you would expect, the finish is long and important in terms of its texture.”

91 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Aromas of black currant, blue flower, tilled soil, menthol, and cedar take center stage. The dense palate delivers mature black cherry, crushed raspberry, mocha, vanilla, nutmeg, and a confectionery note. Velvety tannins provide the framework.”

91 Pointz Wine Spectator

“This creamy Amarone shows lovely balance, with delicate spice and orange zest accents enlivening the flavors of black cherry puree, dried lavender, date, and mineral. Well-knit tannins provide a supple frame.”

“A pure note of lingonberry preserves heralds this finely knit, mouthwatering red. The ripe fruit is meshed with supple tannins and flavors of dried marjoram, dark chocolate shavings, rich, woodsy minerality, and creamy melted licorice. Offers a lasting, harmonious finish.”

94 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Opening with aromas of crushed violet, ripe plum, and black pepper, this is one Amarone that seamlessly combines a hefty structure with finesse. The ripe, savory palate doles out juicy black cherry, blackberry jam, licorice, cake spice, and tobacco alongside firm, velvety tannins that lend it to a polished texture.”

2010 Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Reviews

94 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“From one of the leading producers in the denomination, this bold Amarone opens with aromas of tilled earth, plum cake, blackberry, and mocha. The dense palate doles out crushed black plum, chocolate, and baking spices alongside smooth tannins.”

93 Poinrz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2010 Amarone delle Valpolicella Classico impresses for its harmony, staying power, and elegance. Wines made from air-dried grapes like Amarone can sometimes feel overdone and overtly jammy. But this wine, made from a balanced vintage, allows the quality of fruit to rise above all the rest. The bouquet opens to dark fruit, prune, resin, cola, and tar. A pretty note of oregano or rosemary gives the an Italian or Mediterranean personality.”
