2017 Zenato Sergio Zenato Amarone Classico Riserva Reviews

98 Pointz James Sucjking

“This is one of those wines where your nose is in the glass for ages, enjoying the complex array of aromas that range from raspberries to dates, perfumed bark to polished wood, pressed flowers to fresh mushrooms. Full-bodied, dense, and focused with fine, well-integrated tannins, plenty of fruit flavor, and an endless finish. A joy to drink even now, but this will age gracefully for many a year.”

97 Pointz Vinous

“The 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato is totally classic to the Zenato style, with macerated cherries, raisins, sweet herbs, cocoa, black pepper, and shavings of cedar. This deeply textural with a dense wave of mineral-encased dark red fruits and balsamic spice carried across a core of stimulating acidity. Mocha and clove mix with black currant and olive as the 2017 finishes dramatically long and potent. There’s simply so much going on here, and more is guaranteed to come with maturation. Also of note is that the 2017 clocks in at only 3.3 grams of residual sugar. This is as serious as they come."

92 Pointz Wine Spectator

“A harmonious version, with the deft integration of supple tannins and lively acidity lending a sense of elegance and accessibility. Features generous, expressive flavors of mulled cherry and black plum reduction, dried flowers and eucalyptus, milled pepper, and iron that linger on the chewy finish.”

91 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Dense and concentrated flavors of black plum, blackberry, and candied cherries open this wine. With a bit more time, subtle aromas of clove, anise, and green peppercorn awaken. The palate is solid and firm. A deep core of fruit is supported by firm tannins and a touch of acidity.”

2016 Zenato Sergio Zenato Amarone Classico Riserva Reviews

98 Pointz James Suckling

“Unfathomable depth and complexity here, with roasted dark licorice, blackberries, tar, porcini, mussels and black chocolate. A light hint of balsamic adds a savory edge, too. The seamless tannins build up gradually on the full-bodied palate. Great balance of ripeness, concentration, and freshness, with a lasting finish.”

“The 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato takes its time opening in the glass, dark and floral with a grumbling of exotic spices, dark chocolate, and, with time, rosy red berries. It’s velvety-smooth and opulent in style, powerful yet soft and enveloping with masses of medicinal berries and exotic spice, dark chocolate, and balsam herbs. It leaves a coating of grippy tannins through the heady finale, and yet, the expression remains remarkably fresh. Be aware that this is a richer and riper style of Amarone; but that said, it’s done remarkably well.”

94 Pointz Wine Spectator

“This graceful, medium- to full-bodied red is finely knit and harmonious, with a pleasing juiciness to the flavors of black cherry and black plum reduction, sandalwood, citrus, and brambly herbs. Shows supple, well-meshed tannins, which emerge on the lingering, spiced finish. Corvina, Rondinella, Oseleta and Croatina.”

“Released with numbered bottles, the Zenato 2016 Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato (in a heavy bottle with 9,000 of them made) is a thickly statured and rich red wine with lots of fruit weight, big intensity and a powerful 16.5% alcoholic content. The wine is redolent of ripe and dark fruit, and there are plenty of savory and smoky notes as well.”

93 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

“Violet, mature black-skinned fruit, and new leather are some of the aromas you get on this big, bold red. Powerfully structured, the full-bodied palate features steeped prune, fruitcake, and licorice framed in tightly knit, velvety tannins.”

2015 Zenato Sergio Zenato Amarone Classico Riserva Reviews

98 Pointz James Suckling

“Violet, mature black-skinned fruit, and new leather are some of the aromas you get on this big, bold red. Powerfully structured, the full-bodied palate features steeped prune, fruitcake, and licorice framed in tightly knit, velvety tannins.”

“The 2015 Amarone Classico della Valpolicella Sergio Zenato Riserva is a massive and towering expression that straddles both savory and sweet with a heady display of plum sauce and crushed raspberries complemented by mentholated herbs, licorice and balsamic spice. There are depths of fresh red and black fruits that gain a polished feel as they coast across velvety textures, while vibrant acidity adds verve, further contrasted by a bitter twang of baker’s chocolate. There’s so much going on here that you hardly notice the 2015’s formidable structure up until the very end, where hints of cumin and ginger linger under an air of violet florals. I believe this opulent beauty deserves an official “Wow.” Drink the 2015 now for its primal intensity and extroverted fruit, or put it away for upwards of a decade. It’s a gorgeous Amarone Riserva.”

94 Pointz Wine Spectator

“This red is full-bodied yet bright and graceful, offering a rich range of baked black cherry, fragrant herb, dried fig, and smoky mineral flavors, with lively acidity and sleek tannins providing a well-defined frame. Well-spiced and citrusy on the chewy finish.”

93 Pointz Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Packaged in a pretty brown label, the Zenato 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato is very ripe and open with aged aromas of tarry smoke and baked fruit. This inky dark wine feels evolved and further down its evolutionary track than it should be. The 2015 vintage was hot and dry leading up to the appassimento process. That oxidative heaviness is pushed forward by a 16.5% alcohol content. The blend is 80% Corvina, 10% Rondinella and the rest is Oseleta and Croatina.”

Plenty of dried fruit and spice aromas with some chocolate, too. Full body, powerful, and rich. This is big and intense for those who love this style.

Rich and full-bodied, yet elegant overall, featuring supple tannins layered with a sleek, finely knit mix of baked black currant, fig cake, dried thyme, and coffee liqueur flavors. A streak of fragrant, smoky mineral drives the finish. Drink now through 2026.

2010 Zenato Sergio Zenato Amarone Classico Riserva Reviews

96 Pointz James Suckling

Wonderful aromas of dried flowers such as roses combine with dark and dried fruits. Extremely aromatic. Full body, round and velvety tannins, and an intense and juicy finish. Love the play of lightly austere tannins and juicy fruit.

93 Pointz Wine Spectator

Tarry smoke and grilled herb notes herald this dense, full-bodied red, along with details of ground coffee, blackberry pâte de fruit, dark chocolate shavings, and ground pink peppercorn. Long and supple, with a lasting, rich, and creamy finish.

91 Pointz Wine Enthusiast

Underbrush, stewed prune, grilled herb, and cedar aromas take center stage on this big bold wine. The densely packed syrupy palate offers blackberry, raisin, black cherry steeped in spirits and chewing tobacco alongside chewy tannins. The heat of alcohol and a confectionery note mark the finish.
